Monsoonal flows barreling across the American Southwest confront the Sangre de Christo Mountains, where rain gathers into small streams that feed larger creeks and rivers, which flow toward the arid valley plain below. Since the mid-1800s farmers in this region have used an ancient Moorish irrigation system imported by the Spanish Empire called acequias (pronounced ah-seh-key-uh) to water their crops in what would otherwise be a sea of desert sage. Water is funneled into a labyrinth of ditches, most of which are so old that they appear native to the land—man-made riparian corridors of centenarian cottonwoods and willows. Using this water, multigenerational farmers like Arnold Valdez grow crops such as heritage beans, potatoes, and corn. The viability of this system and a way of life are threatened by the mega-drought that has plagued the American West for two decades as well as urban water developers looking to divert this rich water supply to cities like Colorado Springs. “We look at natural resources as survival; speculators look at it as profit.
