Photos by Elliot Ross @elliotstudio / An editor at Nat Geo asked me about the greatest challenge I faced in crafting an article on the demographics of shade for the July issue of the magazine. The answer was easy: how to make a data-heavy story based on racist policy both visually impactful and relevant. Photographic history plays a critical role in my approach, and for this story, I wanted to pay homage to Ed Ruscha, known for his canonical work "Every Building on Sunset Strip." From first glance, these four vignettes of Los Angeles' Vermont Avenue crystallize how stark the differences within a few miles.Writer @alejandrabee explains: "Trees become sparser and neighborhoods hotter as you drive from north to south along Vermont Avenue. Over about six miles, the road passes through areas that show the enduring effects of housing discrimination through redlining, which ranked areas from A (“green,” or most suitable for investment) to D (“red,” or least suitable). At the north end, in Los Feliz, spreading fig trees line the avenue. In this and other affluent grade A areas, a 1939 map notes, deed restrictions left ownership of some houses “limited in perpetuity to Caucasian” buyers. Grade B was still “reasonably homogenous.” But grade C was marked by “subversive racial elements” and potential “infiltration” from redlined grade D areas—such as the one near I-10 in Pico-Union. Today, trees are all but absent there, and average temperatures are notably hotter than they are six miles north."
