Photo by Elliot Ross @elliotstudio / If you’ve ever driven, biked, or walked around Los Angeles, you’ve probably experienced what it’s like to find yourself suddenly blinded by intense light coming off a façade. It happened to me while driving in on the 110 freeway from the airport on my first night of this assignment to cover the demographics of shade. Traffic was moving along at a good clip, and when the glare hit, the car ahead of mine hit the brakes. Thankfully my rental car’s sensors read the situation and automatically braked. These situations aside, this concentrated light also casts a beam of heat disproportionately onto disadvantaged neighborhoods. These areas were defined by a concept known as redlining in the first half of the 20th century, in which many neighborhoods across the country were graded A, B, C, and D (redlined)—based largely around racial makeup. Lower graded areas were comprised mostly of people of color while As and Bs consisted of majority white populations that, with the good grading, enjoyed access to zero-interest mortgages and civic investment—which includes tree cover. This legacy of codified racism is still felt today in the infrastructure and urban environments in cities across the United States. For more on this story, click the link in our bio.
