In winter, much of the surface-level ecology hibernates: aspens stand bare, only the highest willows break the surface of the deep snow, and small creeks are mostly frozen solid. From the high slopes, avalanches intermittently unleash thousands of tons of ice and snow, ripping holes in the forest below that allow new life to take root in the inevitability of spring.
