Snow leopards have the longest tails proportionally of the big cats— nearly as long as the rest of their body. They can be up to one meter (yard) in length and help the leopard to balance on steep, rocky slopes. The thick tail also boosts protection against the cold since the leopard can wrap them around their nose and legs while they are resting. As snow leopards patrol their territory, one way they mark their land is by spraying urine and scent on stones.
