Studies done by scientists at @snowleopardtrust show that even in the presence of abundant wild prey like blue sheep and ibex, snow leopards still opportunistically hunt livestock. It's this soft spot for an easy meal that, at least partly, has brought these cats into conflict with humans. All creatures in these remote, rugged, brutally cold mountains, humans and snow leopards included, live with a very thin margin for survival. A family's loss of a sheep—or a donkey or yak calf—results in the loss of precious rupees and calories. An innovative insurance program introduced by wildlife biologist Charu Mishra in the early 2000s and implemented and administered by locals in the Spiti region has reduced the threat to families and their hostility toward the cats.
