For five consecutive months, Iraqi youth successfully occupied the square, which is both strategic and symbolic to Baghdad. COVID-19 brought the protests to a halt in the spring, with curfews and social distancing, but the impact of the protests continues to ripple through, and in some cases upend, the status quo. "For Iraq, I hope that the parliament dissolves, that there are no more [corrupt] political parties, and that women take their rights.
