The construction of massive telescopes on the Big Island's Mauna Kea has been a source of conflict within some of the Hawaiian community for decades. The most recently proposed project, the Thirty-Meter Telescope, drew thousands led by Native Hawaiian activists, educators, artists, and elders to block the approved construction on a mountain that is considered deeply sacred in Hawaiian culture. Like the movement that grew in Standing Rock in 2016, the community attracted Indigenous allies from around the world who came to stand in solidarity for the most recent blockade, which began in July 2019. Today construction remains halted.
