Meanwhile, more than a thousand secondary schools across the United States continue to utilize Native American-inspired mascots—including the Cuyahoga Heights Middle School in Ohio, shown here. .In 2005 the American Psychological Association issued a report calling for the retirement of Indigenous mascots, citing their presence as a dangerous influence on not just Native American students, but their classmates as well. “The use of American Indian mascots as symbols in schools and university athletic programs is particularly troubling because schools are places of learning,” it reads. “These mascots are teaching stereotypical, misleading, and too often, insulting images of American Indians. These negative lessons are not just affecting American Indian students; they are sending the wrong message to all students.”
