Photo by @simonnorfolkstudio / Constructed between 1599 and 1602, the Allahverdi Khan Bridge, popularly known as Si-o-se-pol (bridge of 33 spans), is the longest span on the Zayanderud, with a total length of almost 300 meters (977ft). Isfahan was once one of the largest cities in the world, flourishing from 1050 to 1722, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries during the Safavid dynasty, when it became the capital of Persia for the second time. Even today, the city retains much of its past glory, with many beautiful palaces, boulevards, mosques, minarets, and bridges. This led to the Persian proverb “Esfahān nesf-e- jahān ast" (Isfahan is half of the world). The river once flowed throughout the year (unlike many of Iran's rivers, which are seasonal), but today runs dry due to a controversial water extraction policy of diverting it for industrial use in neighboring Yazd Province.
