Photo by @katieorlinsky / Maverick, a sled dog husky, rests on a boat frame in Utqiagvik, Alaska. For over 3,000 years, dogs have been pulling sleds for the people of the far north, and remained the chief form of transportation until the invention of airplanes and snowmobiles. One of the most famous events in the history of dog mushing was the 1925 Serum Run, a dog sled relay across Alaska that transported diphtheria antitoxin to the town of Nome in time to stop the disease from becoming an epidemic. Just a few years earlier the 1918 flu devastated Alaska Native villages, and elders today still remember the stories from their parents. Fortunately, there is a robust vaccination campaign in place across rural Alaska, and the state is currently leading the nation’s per capita vaccination rate. And while I love everything about sled dogs, in this case I am pretty glad health workers can take planes and snowmobiles to get the vaccine to those in need.Check out Nat Geo's link in bio for more on this story.
