Photo by @katieorlinsky / In Alaska the dark days of winter also mean the beginning of sled dog racing season. Professional dog musher Ray Redington, Jr., the grandson of Iditarod founder Joe Redington, races during the 2015 Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile International Sled Dog race in Dawson City, Canada. Dog mushing has a long history in the north; over 3,000 years ago hunter-gatherer communities were using dogs to pull sleds in the Arctic Circle, and indigenous communities used sled dogs long before Europeans bred the animals for transportation and hauling as they colonized the region in the 19th century. It wasn’t until the 1960s, once highways were built and snowmobiles became widespread, that dogs were no longer needed for transport. Still, the practice of dog mushing remained a cultural and recreational activity in communities across the Arctic, and the world of competitive sled dog racing began.
