They come from across the Camargue region to parade through town alongside Arlésiennes in their traditional dresses. Gardians are the French version of cowboys. Women wear the Arlésienne dress, dating to the mid-18th century, when the women of Arles decided to dress differently from other French women as a symbol of their independence.
