Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid / In March 2020, as the planet shut down in the face of COVID-19, I found myself heading to Kenya on the last flight before the country closed. In conservation terms, what we faced was the perfect storm: an industry largely reliant on tourism for funding and communities that had moved away from traditional sources of revenue in favor of tourism now found themselves without income. I wanted to ask: Can conservation survive without tourism? For the next 18 months, using Kenya to find the answer, we did exactly that. The story is out now in National Geographic magazine, with insightful words by @t_mcconnell; follow the link in the bio. I’m indebted to those extraordinary individuals who let me into their lives during this difficult time. This image from @r.e.s.c.u.e elephant sanctuary was taken on day one of this story, when I met Long’uro. Without the support of the community he would certainly not have survived, and in fact he has flourished. He was discovered at the bottom of a well dug into the landscape; he’d fallen in while drinking with his herd. Having reached out for help during the night, his trunk had been torn off by the hyenas that prowled around him. If ever there was a beacon of survival, he is it, and I shall continue to follow his story. These colorful blankets keep orphan elephants warm during the night, and during the day, they hang on trees so that the elephants can use them as pacifiers because they carry the scent of their surrogate mothers: their human caregivers. To see more follow me @chancellordavid.
