Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid / An elephant calf killed alongside its mother in an incident of human-wildlife conflict is slowly absorbed into the earth, northern Botswana. Maybe I was naive, or maybe I simply believed that I could travel through this work, this life, without carrying ghosts with me. I now know that isn’t the case. I’m haunted by memories, memories backed up by proof in the form of images. I have memories of my father sharing his images taken while we traveled. I didn’t have those memories until I looked at his work, and now my childhood is carved out of these Kodachrome frames. Maybe if I hadn’t seen this elephant calf lying next to its mother and watched its warm blood color the sand as life ran out of its body, my view of this scene would be different. The fact is I did. For months I returned to this site and watched the earth slowly reclaim the mother and calf. It was almost as if the ground had opened up and wrapped its dusty, warm fingers around them, pulling them back in, dust to dust. Now it’s calm here. Little sign of the panic and carnage at the site where mother and calf died side by side. In my head and in my heart, there is no such calm. To see more follow me @chancellordavid.
