Video by @bertiegregory An oceanic whitetip shark approaches to investigate me in the Red Sea. My dive buddy and I had waited at a depth of five meters (about 15 feet) in the blue for 45 minutes before this shark showed up. It was pretty special to feel very, very tiny, with hundreds of feet of water below us. These sharks roam the open ocean and are known for their curiosity, which together allow them to find food in the vastness of the sea. Sadly, commercial fishing and the shark fin trade have hammered their numbers throughout their range. Despite how you might feel toward sharks, they play a critical role in ocean ecosystems. Healthy shark populations mean healthy oceans, and healthy oceans mean healthy people. Don’t agree? Please read the fascinating oceanic whitetip article by Glenn Hodges under "These sharks once ruled the seas" in the magazine archives.
