It has roots in traditional Japanese culture; at one time these sarumawashi performances were associated with religion, and the monkeys seen as spiritual messengers—thought to be capable of dispelling evil spirits and facilitating good fortune. As Japan modernized, the spiritual significance of most Sarumawashi acts faded. Today’s performances mostly resemble circus acts, like the commercial show at Nikko Saru Gundan. I saw this this act several times, and the monkey usually wasn't able to land, falling into the water. When I asked the trainer if the monkey enjoyed this, he replied: “No. They don’t like the cold water.” For more on this story, see the March 2020 issue.
