Over the past five years, 300 families have had to abandon their homes due to rising waters. "Since I was born, I have seen sea levels get at least 300 meters [yards] closer to the village,” says Sebastien Ndong, 52, the village leader. "Even the house where I grew up is down there, under the water." Coastal erosion could separate villages, turning them into islands. Currently the loss of coastline is estimated at about three meters [yards] per year.
