The mother was nursed back to health, and the family was returned to the wild. Not long after their release, however, the kittens were killed by cars in southwestern Florida. Their mother survived, and continues to produce offspring. Roadkill is the leading documented cause of death for panthers, claiming a recent average of 25 per year.
