They are on the edge of extinction, but in a hopeful turn, scientists from the @biorescue_project have created four more northern white rhino embryos that await implantation. These join the five viable embryos from earlier procedures. This was the most successful series of procedures—from oocyte collection in Kenya to in vitro fertilization and cryopreservation in Italy— the team of Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (@leibnizizw), @SafariParkDvurKralove @KenyaWildlifeService @OlPejetaConservancy and #Avantea has ever conducted.Now the team will utilize a sterilized southern white rhino bull. His behavior will indicate the reproductive cycle of potential surrogate mothers without risk of impregnating them. The bull will be introduced to the Ol Pejeta southern white rhino females identified as potential surrogates, so that the embryos can be transferred at the correct cycle time.
