Moving on the sea ice needed planning. You could only leave the vessel during field work hours, between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and only with a polar bear "guard." These hours were subject to change in the event of storms, polar bear visits, or a large break in sea ice. On this day the temperature was -47°C with windchill.
