关注 @ evgenia_arbugaeva了解更多北极故事。

Photo by @evgenia_arbugaeva / Last autumn I spent two weeks in a hut with a scientist who was studying Pacific walruses in the biggest walrus rookery on the planet, in the Chukotka region of the Russian Arctic. We were trapped inside for three of those days, careful not to set off panic among the estimated 100,000 animals that hauled out around us. Walruses are used to resting on the floating ice, but because of the receding ice in the Arctic Ocean they are forced to haul out on the beach, where there is not enough space for all of them. Our hut was shaking from the movement and fighting of the walruses, and their loud roars kept us awake at night. I felt helpless thinking of the future of this fragile region.
