What if there was a mandatory class on the environment to create an understanding of the health of the planet and our wildlife, and how we as humans affect our natural world? Might we be better connected to our environment? Whether you like bats or not, the nightly emergence at San Antonio's Bracken Cave is a phenomenon that inspires admiration and wonder; I take as many of my students there as possible. Time and again I’ve watched bat naysayers forget their dislikes and utter oohs and aahs, as the wind from millions of wings brushes their skin, as ten million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge into the evening. Every night in the summer these bats come out to eat their body weight in insects. During those months, the numbers of bats in the cave double to 20 million as the females have their babies.Take a youth to see a wildlife phenomenon. Let’s amaze them. Let’s get them into nature. Let’s connect them. Let’s educate them about the environment. And let’s see what they can accomplish. @batconservationinternational
