案例简介：Photos by @renan_ozturk / We’d like to fill you in on the 2021 National Geographic Lost World Expedition, whose goal was a transect of the Upper Paikwa River Basin, near Guyana’s northwestern frontier with Brazil and Venezuela, to look for new species of amphibians and reptiles in one of the world’s richest and least explored hotspots of biodiversity. Words by @m_synnott: “When we finally popped out of the cloud forest at the base of Weiassipu tepui just before sunset, it felt like being born. And there, with their backs to the wall, stood Franklin George and Harris Aaron, our Akawaio guides, covered in sweat but otherwise looking remarkably clean compared to the rest of us. “We did it Mr. Mark,” said Franklin, pointing toward the towering cliff that disappeared into a swirling cloud. Without a map, compass, or GPS, Franklin and Harris had somehow delivered us to within a few yards of the crack that we had sketched in our notebooks. I had to wonder if the tepui gods were tipping their hats to these two remarkable bushmen when the sky began to brighten a few minutes later and a patch of blue flashed overhead. As if something was now hovering them up from above, the clouds shot skyward, and in the course of less than a minute, the murk vaporized and the wall was illuminated with gold rays of evening light. @alexhonnold and @Fuconei, who had scrambled a few feet up the cliff, were hooting and hollering, and I let loose with an involuntary "wahoo" at the top of my lungs when I saw that Mount Roraima had been revealed on the other side of the valley. It had been raining for days, and the ten-mile-long east face was pumping with a dozen cataracts as tall as the Empire State Building.” With director @taylorfreesolo.
