# earthday
Photos and video by @renan_ozturk | I chronicled a National Geographic expedition that made an "elevational transect" in the Upper Paikwa River Basin, near Guyana’s border with Brazil and Venezuela. The goal: help biologist Bruce Means scale a tepui (a mesa-like mountain) to look for new species of amphibians and reptiles in one of the world’s richest and least explored hot spots of biodiversity. The final stage of our journey led us through a pristine cloud forest and culminated with a first ascent up 7,000-foot (2,100 m) Mount Weiassipu. The expedition is the subject of the magazine's April cover story. After weeks of rain and claustrophobia under the jungle canopy and a steep climb up a section of Weiassipu, we reached this hanging ledge (that’s Mount Roraima in the distance). We were buffeted by a moving river of cloud moisture, but the air cleared for about 30 minutes as we finished setting up the portaledges, our bunks for the night. We paused to take in the view. Across the basin, moonlight illuminated waterfalls and tendrils of mist before we were engulfed again in violent rain. Swipe through for more behind-the-scenes photos of the expedition and crew, including Means (image 4) and veteran climber Federico Pisani (images 5 and 6).Follow @renan_ozturk for more on this story and check out the Earth Day premiere of "The Last Tepui” on Disney+. #earthday
