Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @mitty | Galápagos marine iguanas are one of the most extraordinary animals I've had the honor of photographing. Every detail of their biology, from their claws to their flattened tails, is meticulously adapted to the rocky shores and verdant waters of the archipelago, where they graze on algae. Their knotted, spiny backs and dark coloring reflect the jagged landscape of the islands, carved by continuous volcanic activity. Exactly one day after @paulnicklen and I left the archipelago, Volcán Wolf erupted, spewing lava across the island of Isabela, where we were working. While I’m optimistic that these scaly little seafarers escaped by sheltering in the shallows, it’s likely their land-dwelling kin on the slopes of the volcano did not fare so well. Perhaps this is yet another reason why these lizards adapted to ocean life. To learn more about the incredible biodiversity of the Galápagos, follow me @mitty.
