Ahmad was among the most severely affected patients in the country, though after 55 days in the ICU, he's making great strides with his recovery. He is on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine, which pumps and oxygenates a patient's blood outside the body—and essentially does the job of the lungs externally in order to give the body a chance to rest and recover. Royal Papworth is one of only five hospitals in England to provide ECMO machines for respiratory failure, and its critical care unit was among the hospitals in a England that took part in the trial for a steroid drug called dexamethasone, which has been shown to reduce mortality in severely ill COVID-19 patients.
