Here, Mayra Osmundson helps adjust team captain Elda Bueno's dress as they get ready to perform. The escaramuza charra is the only women's event in the charrería, the Mexican rodeo tradition. Teams of eight riders perform complex synchronized choreography while riding sidesaddle in adelitas outfits, inspired by the garb of the women who fought in the Mexican Revolution. The sport is widely practiced in the U.S. among the Chicano communities, where women can celebrate their riding skills and their heritage—and compete for a chance to participate in finals in Mexico.
