We thank you. From Apollo to Artemis, African Americans have contributed greatly to our mission of reaching new heights and revealing the unknown for the benefit of humankind. We will continue to recognize the contributions of all who have made NASA’s successful history of exploration possible. Photo facts in order: 👨🏿🚀A physician, flight surgeon, & NASA astronaut, Bernard Harris became the first African American to perform a spacewalk in February 1995, during space shuttle Discovery's STS-63 mission. ⭐From Left to right: Vivian Merritt, Office of Equal Opportunity Programs, Mary W. Jackson, Manger, Federal Woman’s Program, guest speaker Mr. James Jennings, and Katherine Johnson, Flight Dynamics and Control Division chat during a student symposium meeting. Jennings’ career has included management and analyst positions at @NASA_Marshall and NASA HQ. Johnson, a mathematician, had a distinguished three-decade career at @NASA_Langley that included making calculations critical to the success of our early human spaceflight missions. 🚀In this image from 2018, NASA astronaut Jeanette Epps trains in a U.S. spacesuit at the @NASAJohnson Space Center. Epps is assigned to NASA’s Boeing Starliner-1 mission, the first operational crewed flight of Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft on a mission to the @ISS. ☄️March 3, 1983. Here we see a Special Control Test Group with Mary W, Jackson. In 1958 Mary Jackson became NASA's first black female engineer and the inspiration behind ‘Hidden Figures’. ✨ This image shows Earnest C. Smith in the Astrionics Laboratory in 1964. Over his career, Smith received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 1972 for significant contributions to the theoretical development, practical implementation and operational support of the navigation systems for the Lunar Roving Vehicle on the Apollo 16 mission, as well as several commendations and the astronauts' Snoopy Award.
