Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid | At sunset, elephants move through a dry forest of mopane trees toward the waters of the Okavango Delta, in northern Botswana. From the air, northern Botswana is a maze of paths—the knowledge of where they lead is passed down through generations of wildlife. I remember being told by an elder that elephants crossed Kenya's Ewaso Nyiro River in large numbers at one particular point each dry season on their way to the forests below Mount Kenya. I was doubtful since the river showed no signs of a crossing point. We set up camp there and after several days of waiting and increasing doubt, sure enough, they turned up. Taking wildlife corridors into account is especially critical in northern Botswana, where people and wildlife live side by side; it's crucial for planning human use of the land. Maintaining wildlife corridors is also vital to reducing human-wildlife conflict, which, as I’m sadly witnessing here, results in deaths on both sides. So much beauty, so much trauma, and so much hope for the future is expressed in these images, part of my work over the past three years in Botswana. Right now my heart is wrapped tightly in the smells, tastes, sights, and sounds of life, and death, in the villages here where man and elephants both live and die side by side. This is from my ongoing "Elephant Politics" story; to see more follow @chancellordavid.
