Maybe she’s born with it – maybe it's molecular collisions in her atmosphere✨An astronaut aboard the International Space Station (@ISS) shot this photograph as the station orbited at an altitude of more than 250 miles over Australia on Oct. 8, 2018. The golden hue enveloping Earth is known as airglow, or diffused bands of light that stretch 50-400 miles (80-644 km) into our atmosphere. A phenomenon that typically happens when molecules (mostly nitrogen and oxygen) are energized by ultraviolet radiation from sunlight. To release that energy, atoms in the lower atmosphere bump into each other and lose energy in the collision – resulting in a colorful glow.Airglow reveals some of the workings of the upper reaches of our atmosphere, helping us learn about the connections between space weather and Earth weather.Image description: A sky full of stars is pictured above Earth’s surface which is shrouded in a golden glow. Dots of city lights scatter Earth’s surface. Portions of the space station’s modules frame the lower corner portions of the image.
