Cameron manages a busy, new Starbucks in Kentucky. But she was once jobless, homeless and “just broken.” While living in a shelter, she decided to visit to Dress for Success, a non-profit that provides women with professional attire and support to help them achieve economic independence. The women there gave Cameron a pearl-colored sweater, gray slacks and a pep talk. “They reminded me this is just a chapter in my book, not the whole entire book,” Cameron said. Cameron interviewed for a job in her new outfit and got it. She went back to school. Everything got better. Whenever she could, she quietly donated to Dress for Success, but never shared her story. The Starbucks Foundation recently asked partners (employees) to nominate nonprofits that serve BIPOC communities for grants. Cameron immediately thought of Dress for Success. She shared her experience in the nomination application, and the nonprofit was awarded a Neighborhood Grant. Cameron got to personally deliver a check to the same women who helped her years ago. “I’m not sure if anyone comes back and says, ‘Thank you, I’m that homeless lady who had nothing and y’all put me in an outfit and it turned my life around,’ and it was time for me to do that,” she said.
