Short, slender legs allow them to move rapidly through underbrush, and that oddly shaped nose is great for uncovering food sources. Due to their large body size, tapirs have trouble dissipating heat–nocturnal behavior is believed to be the solution to this problem, allowing individuals to remain inactive during the hottest time of the day. In some habitats, tapirs are considered gardeners of the forest, dispersing seeds through their feces while traveling throughout their home range. Researchers also consider the Baird’s tapir to be an important species for indicating the overall health of rainforests because of their rarity and sensitivity to habitat disturbance.
