Photos by @lisettepoole / The border wall wraps over the uneven terrain that divides Juárez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. In the second slide, footprints in the desert near the border wall in Juárez indicate a busy path for smugglers and migrants. The mesh border wall in the distance is easier to penetrate, so smugglers often cut out portions of the fence. This year the border is seeing more illegal crossings than in previous years. In January I went to Juárez with support from the National Geographic Emergency Fund for Journalists and met dozens of people who had been sent back to Mexico without a chance to claim asylum. One woman had fallen off the wall and sustained injuries to both her arms and head—American authorities dropped her off at the bridge and sent her back to Mexico. I later returned to Juárez with writer Nina Strochlic @ninasabina24 for our story “Stuck at the border, migrant mothers confront a complex maze.” Tap the link in bio to read more.
