The Rohingya are a Muslim minority originally from the Rakhine state in Myanmar (Burma), where the population is mostly Buddhist. Since October 2015, nearly 712,000 have been displaced, according to UNHCR, crowding into refugee camps near Cox’s Bazar, just over the border in southern Bangladesh. They fled escalating violence from the Burmese army, denounced by the United Nations as ethnic cleansing. Following a 1982 law that forced them to prove their presence in the land before the British colonization in order to obtain nationality, they became stateless. Many have fled the country in successive waves for 40 years to reach their Muslim neighbor.
