Photo by @danwintersphoto / Final flight of Endeavor, STS 134, from Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida, May 16, 2011. This year marks a decade since the final launches of the NASA space shuttles Discovery, Endeavor, and Atlantis. I had the great honor to shoot all three, which I chronicled in my book Last Launch. Shuttle launches were awe-inspiring events to witness. On the day of this one, the cloud ceiling was very low, so the shuttle was in view for only 18 seconds before passing out of sight. I felt fortunate to capture that fleeting moment in time. Retiring the shuttles marked the end of an era, not only for NASA, but for all the fans and champions of the shuttle program worldwide. For 30 years, the shuttles worked tirelessly, and their crowning achievement was delivering the components to construct the ISS (International Space Station). Once that goal was achieved, the shuttles were considered too expensive to maintain and operate, and the fleet was retired. The future of space travel is once again in the forefront of the public eye, with the efforts being made for a lunar landing by 2024. @nasa is working with several private U.S. companies and international partners on the Artemis program, which aspires to put both a woman and a man on the moon. The goal will be to create a presence on the moon that allows for paid travel there, and ultimately to send humans to Mars as well.Follow me at @danwintersphoto as I document the Artemis program for @natgeo over the next four years. @nasaartemis #nasa #spacex
