This family is known in the Kinyarwanda language as Isabukuru, which translates to "happy birthday." The giant mass of dark fur in the center of the image is the group's dominant silverback, who is also named Isabukuru. Experienced gorilla guide Emmanuel Harerimana explained that Isabukuru is known for being a very gentle leader, playing often with the baby mountain gorillas in his family group. At the time of this photo, Isabukuru was also a caretaker of three orphaned babies whose mothers had been transferred to a neighboring gorilla group. In fall 2021, a new campus—named after supporter Ellen DeGeneres—for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund will supercharge the fund’s five decades of successful field conservation efforts to save these magnificent mountain gorillas.
