Known as the “sky islands,” these mountaintops are separated by deep and dry valleys full of a sea of clouds. These valleys restrict many species of birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals from moving across, resulting in their genetic isolation. This is one reason why these mountaintops are packed with species found nowhere else in the world. This sky island ecosystem is my favorite, as it was the first story that I published for National Geographic.
