A massive head and strong jaw allow the carnivorous loggerhead to feast on jellyfish, conchs, crabs, and fish as it travels through the ocean. Mature females will often return to the beach where they hatched to lay their eggs, which is one of the ways scientists keep tabs on the loggerhead population. While this species is the most abundant of marine turtle species in U.S. waters, persistent population declines due to pollution, shrimp trawling, and development in their nesting areas, among other factors, have kept this turtle on the threatened species list since 1978.
