It's a day to raise awareness about the importance of all types of forests, and it's an appropriate day to honor one courageous woman. Julia Butterfly Hill was among a group of rotating tree sitters in old-growth redwoods. In 1997, she ascended a thousand-year-old, 180-foot-tall redwood in Humboldt County, California, with the intention of spending one week at the top, a method used by environmental activists to prevent these trees from being felled. Julia ended up not touching terra firma again for a remarkable 738 days. She came to call the tree Luna, its name to this day. I had the honor of climbing Luna twice. I can’t imagine an experience that will ever come my way that will eclipse how I felt when I reached the treetop for the first time. Using simple friction knots to climb, I even took my 4x5 camera with me on the second trip up. Julia’s efforts brought worldwide attention to the clear-cut logging in this area, and she succeeded in saving the tree. Without people like Julia Butterfly Hill reminding us of the fragility of this beautiful planet we occupy—and teaching us to honor its natural resources—destruction of our home is inevitable. We owe a debt of gratitude to those who dedicate their time and energy to drawing our attention to crucial issues about our planet.
