Meet Billy Yue (@8illy), the Chinese American creator who is channeling his art through his effervescent personality.“I went to a really uniform school where there was an academic status quo that every single person followed, and I was always falling behind,” says Billy. “It was a crowd of people who frowned upon creating and art, and I realized I enjoyed doing those things way more than school.”Billy’s short-form video edits offer up a world of boundless creative possibility and allow him to express himself in unexpected ways through dance, music, drawing and animation.While Billy’s creative output is pushing culture forward, he feels it’s important to spotlight the API community more widely and positively. “I feel it’s underrepresented, rarely talked about in a positive light or generally appreciated by other communities. Most people don’t know about the community and its culture, so they don’t bother learning or respecting it,” he says.“The recent wave of hate crimes make me realize that all POC should help each other out with empathy and love because this stuff happens a lot to all of us. I see a lot of people brushing these hate crimes off or even downright refusing to care about them because it’s not within their community — and it’s things like that that make me want to create more so I can have a bigger platform to reach people and teach people about things like this.”Reel by @8illyMusic by c.syresmith
