Photo by Cristina Mittermeier / The minute I set foot in the Galápagos Islands, red surrounded me. Thousands of crimson Sally Lightfoot crabs perched on volcanic rock, scuttling quietly in and out of the pounding ocean waves. Part of my job as a conservation photographer is to stealthily document my subject, but these skittish crustaceans tested my patience. John Steinbeck wrote about them while documenting fauna here: “They appear to read the mind of their hunter...When you plunge at them, they seem to disappear in a puff of blue smoke...It is impossible to creep up on them.” Luckily for me, the crab on this boulder stayed still, and I managed to capture them in a long exposure. But photographers are not what they have to worry about. After just a short walk, I saw thousands of plastic bottles and bags washed up on the shore. The Galápagos Islands, once a haven for wildlife, will soon join a graveyard of plastic beaches and choked bays, and these crabs will struggle to survive. No matter how small, animals like these are infinitely important to their ecosystem, and we must fight to protect them. You can do your part and avoid single-use plastics and always try to reuse and recycle. Follow me @mitty on my journey as a conservationist and artist and learn more about how you can help protect our ocean. #galapagos #plasticfree #oceanphotography
