案例简介：Photos by @renaeffendiphoto | A decade ago, I went to Chernobyl, Ukraine, to document the long-term effects of the world's worst nuclear disaster. While traveling through the deserted nearby villages, I encountered a few elderly women. They chose to return to their homes just a few months after the accident and decided to remain there. When I spoke to them about the hazardous levels of contamination still present in the water, soil, air, and basically all around them, they told me they weren't afraid of things they couldn't see. “Radiation, pfff. What about starvation? We're more afraid of that,” they said. They planted potatoes in the contaminated soil of their small orchards and made preserves from berries and mushrooms, which they harvested in the forbidden forests of the exclusion zone. "A pigeon flies close to its nest. Those who left all died of sadness," one said. The women have outlived their husbands and some even their children. I could not help but admire and respect their resilience; they seemed invincible. Living in near-complete isolation, their bond to their homeland was so profound that no danger or hardship could deter them. Some of these women had lived through unspeakable trauma. Hanna (first image) had survived Holodomor—a Stalin-era famine in Soviet Ukraine. As a six-month-old baby, she was almost butchered for food when the villagers resorted to cannibalism in order to survive. These women lived through the Nazi occupation and the Holocaust, and then in 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear explosion. In these very difficult and tumultuous times, my heart and mind goes back to these brave, spirited women and their perseverance at the face of disaster.
