Photos by Stephen Alvarez @salvarezphoto / Cave art can be a time machine transporting us back to an unimaginable world. A world where lions, hyena, rhinoceros, and giant deer roamed Europe. This passage in Chauvet is known as the passage of the Megaloceros, but it also contains depictions of other long-extinct animals. I started my nonprofit @ancientartarchive to share and preserve images like this. The Megaloceros, also called the Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus), was one of the largest deer to ever live. Its range extended across Eurasia in the Pleistocene. The animal is known from skeletal remains and also from a handful of depictions in Paleolithic cave art. The Megaloceros image on the right-hand side of the passage is carbon-14 dated to 36,000 years BP. For more images like this follow me @salvarezphoto and @ancientartarchive.
