Photo by @nataliekeyssar / People all over the world embrace faith and ritual during times of crisis. Statistically many turn to religion during tough times, or become more observant when confronted with loss and uncertainty. To explore this idea, I spent the past few weeks traveling across Alabama, one of the most religious states in the U.S., according to the Pew Research Center, looking at how faith has intersected with one of the most difficult years anyone can remember. I met Candice Eaton as she sorted through the wreckage of her home, destroyed by a tornado in Wellington, Alabama, in late March. Like so many others, the pandemic was not the only crisis Eaton had to endure. As Eaton was searching through the debris for her son’s favorite baseball cards, she told me this was the second time in a decade that her home had been hit by a tornado—and that she had been involved in a car accident when she got the news about this one. Thankfully she was unhurt, and she showed incredible resilience and composure as she tried to pick up the pieces, with help from faith-based volunteer groups from her community who came out in droves. She cried as we spoke, but also found the strength to smile. “If I wasn’t religious, I don’t know where I’d be right now,” she said. Thank you so much @insidenatgeo for the generous support for this project, publishing in full soon on @natgeo.
