Since October 2015, nearly 712,000 have been displaced. Crowded into refugee camps near Cox’s Bazar, in southern Bangladesh, they fled the escalating violence against them by the Burmese army, denounced by the United Nations as ethnic cleansing. The Rohingya are a religious minority in Myanmar, where the majority of the population is Buddhist. After a 1982 law forced them to prove their presence in the land before British colonization in order to obtain nationality, they became stateless, and many have fled the country in successive waves for 40 years to reach their Muslim neighbor.
