Photo by David Chancellor / Lion at dawn, Masai Mara, Kenya: I remember my son, Fin, would often lean back like this and smell the morning air. He was very young at the time, and we would watch him delight in the smell and the taste. There is no other smell that can compare with the impending arrival of rain over an African landscape. It’s something about the moisture holding the dust down as the heat from the warm earth still tries to rise, I think. It’s called petrichor, the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The word is constructed from the Greek petra (rock), or petros (stone), and īchōr, the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology. I asked Fin to describe what it tastes like: “like ice cream!” To see more follow me @chancellordavid.
