Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid | I remember many years ago standing for what seemed like hours over the carcass of an elephant. Even in death I find them mesmerizing. The white lines seen here are caused by vultures; it’s often possible to get an indication of the health of scavenger populations from carcasses. So much can learned fromelephants in both death and life. This death was classified as a natural mortality, and the tusks removed by the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks, which then marks the animal so that it’s not counted twice. Education is key to changing our relationship with wildlife. The last image in the carousel is an elephant suit for an actor. He’ll adopt the role of a crop-raiding elephant and others will play farmers. This enables children and guests at lodges to understand more about the issues faced by communities living alongside wildlife. In the case of schoolchildren, it’s hoped that should they encounter an elephant on the way home, this lesson may be the one that saves their life—as well as that of the elephant.
