For a Nat Geo assignment to photograph Confederate monuments throughout the South, my friend and artist Marshall Scheuttle was kind enough to come along on the 24-day journey as a photographic assistant, safety lookout, time organizer, and driver, all rolled into one. Marshall is also a superb photographer, so he kept me on my game. One day we drove from Augusta to Atlanta, Georgia, a two-hour trip. I told him we'd be on the road for a few hours to capture monuments between the cities. We ended up shooting 15 monuments over nine hours, both of us exhausted by the evening.
