The wildfire has burned over 900,000 acres (364,000 ha) and is the second largest fire in California history. Firefighters call these trees “widow makers” because they are often the cause of injuries and deaths among firefighters. The trees have burned so thoroughly they can fall down at any moment, or drop chunks of burned and dead tree limbs from above onto those who might be working below. To me, these trees are the most terrifying part of covering fires, simply because of their unpredictability—when and which way they'll fall. Several times over the past 11 days, I stood photographing in a burning forest, listening to the thumps of falling trees around me and in the distance. Thank you to all the brave and tieless firefighters who are working relentlessly to fight the many fires burning across California. @calfire #dixiefire #caldorfire #wildfires #extremeweather
